Work-Life Balance: A Matter of Habits (and a Bit of Tech)
Working hard is cool, being productive even more so. But ending up answering emails at midnight with a coffee in hand and burning eyes… not so much. The line between work and personal life is getting thinner, especially for those in tech or working remotely. That’s why establishing and tracking daily habits can make the difference between being efficient and being completely burned out.

Why Do Habits Matter?

Habits are the autopilot of our lives. If set up well, they help us stay focused on work without frying our brains. If neglected, we end up procrastinating or, worse, working non-stop thinking we’re super productive.

Key Habits for a Healthy Balance

  1. Set Clear Work Hours ⏰
    1. When working from home, the temptation to “just finish one last thing” is huge. Set a start and end time for your workday and stick to it. If you use tools like Slack or email, set a status to indicate when you’re unavailable.
  1. Plan Breaks (and Take Them!) 🧘‍♂️
    1. No, scrolling through Instagram doesn’t count as a break. Every 90 minutes or so, get up, move, stretch, or get some fresh air. The Pomodoro technique (25 minutes of work, 5 minutes of break) can be very helpful, especially during deep focus sessions.
  1. Separate Work and Personal Spaces 🏡
    1. If possible, don’t work from your bed or couch. Creating a dedicated workspace helps your brain distinguish when it’s time to focus and when it’s time to relax.
  1. Exercise Regularly 🏋️‍♂️
    1. Your body affects your mind. Even just a 30-minute walk can boost your energy and concentration. If you don’t have time for a full workout, try short stretching sessions throughout the day.
  1. Turn Off Notifications After Hours 📵
    1. If your phone buzzes every two seconds with work notifications, your brain stays on high alert. Disable non-essential notifications after work hours, or use the “Do Not Disturb” mode.

Apps and Techniques to Track Habits

To make sure these great intentions don’t stay just theory, here are some apps that can help:
  • Habitica – Turns your habits into an RPG game: the more consistent you are, the more your avatar levels up.
  • Loop Habit Tracker – Minimalist and open-source, perfect for those who love simplicity.
  • Notion/Trello – Great for organizing your day and keeping track of work and relaxation time.
  • Forest – An app that encourages you to stay off your phone: while you work, you plant a virtual tree that grows if you stay focused.

Conclusion

Creating and tracking daily habits doesn’t mean becoming a robot but finding a balance between productivity and well-being. Technology offers us useful tools, but in the end, the most important thing is learning to respect our own time. And if we slip up once in a while? No worries, what matters is getting back on track without guilt. 😉
And now, excuse me while I carefully reread this post… because, despite everything, I still don’t follow any of this advice. In fact, I usually start sweating from anxiety by 9 AM. So yeah, this post is mostly for me. 😅
